The size of a gemstone is measured in carats. One carat is divided into 100 points. In diamonds, 1 carat = 200 points, so a 5-carat diamond weighs 1/5th of an ounce. But weight can be deceiving. For example, although it’s heavier than other gems, cubic zirconia is rarely used to make engagement rings because it doesn’t have much luster or brilliance — and many experts consider synthetic moissanite to be a better option for engagement rings than real diamonds. Moissanite has less brilliance and luster too, but far fewer people can tell it’s not a real diamond until they are up close to 10 times closer than they’d ever need to view an engagement ring from.
