How to remove carpet stains
When something is spilled on the carpet, you should know that the best solution is usually to clean it with water. Try to blot (never rub) the stain with a slightly damp, white cloth.
If water doesn’t work, use a carpet stain remover. The best carpet stain remover will target the cause of the stain. Follow these three steps:
Carpet cleaning #1: Remove the excess as soon as possible
Scrape off excess solids with a spoon or butter knife as soon as possible. You can avoid permanent damage through this method.
Gently blot up excess liquid with a clean, white, absorbent cloth, working from the outer edge of the stain toward the center to prevent spreading . Never rub, as you can permanently damage the fibers of the carpet,
Carpet cleaning # 2: Apply a carpet stain remover
Spray any remaining stain with a carpet stain remover, following the manufacturer’s directions for application.
You can also clean the carpet with a vinegar solution as follows:
- Mix 1 teaspoon of mild dishwashing liquid in a glass of warm water and add 1/4 teaspoon of white vinegar
- Apply it to the carpet stain
- Don’t get the stain too wet
- Let it sit for 10 minutes.
Always check the colorfastness in an inconspicuous place before applying a carpet stain remover.
Carpet cleaning #3: Wipe the stain with a cloth
Using a clean, white, absorbent cloth, wipe from the outside in. Repeat the operation until we do not transfer the stain to the cloth. Blot the stain with cold water, then blot it dry with a cloth.
For complete drying, try this trick: cover the damp area with a half-centimeter-thick layer of cloth or paper towels. Support them with a heavy object and change paper towels until dry.
How to remove different types of stains
Blood
Avoid using hot water to clean bloodstains on the carpet, as this will help the stain stick to the material.
Apply cold water, or sparkling water, then wipe with a clean cloth. Do this repeatedly until the stain fades away.
Candle wax
To remove candle wax the from carpet, rub an ice pack over the wax until it hardens. Gently break up the wax, then vacuum up the chunks.
Treat the stain with a carpet cleaner, following the manufacturer’s instructions, or with a white cloth dampened with a small amount of rubbing alcohol. Dry the area with a cloth.
Chocolate
For chocolate stains on the carpet, use a dull knife to scrape off as much chocolate as possible.
If the chocolate is melted, place a resealable plastic bag filled with ice cubes over the stain to harden any remaining chocolate before scraping.
Vacuum the area to pick up any flakes or loose bits. Mix 1/4 teaspoon of liquid dish soap with a cup of warm water and use a clean cloth to apply the solution to the stain, working from the outside to the center.
Bleach the stain after letting the solution sit for five minutes.
Coffee or tea
To remove coffee or tea stains from the carpet, it is recommended to mix 2 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide with 1 tablespoon of dish soap .
Blot the stain first, then apply the solution. Let it sit for a few seconds before applying the solution with your fingers.
Rinse the stain with water, dry it and repeat the operation until it is removed.
Dirt
Let dirt or mud stains on the carpet dry completely before treating them . Scrape up as much debris as possible, then vacuum the carpet. Apply a detergent solution. Let the solution sit on the stain for 10 minutes before blotting it up with a clean white cloth or paper towel.
Grease stains (butter, margarine, sauce, etc.)
Use baking soda as a carpet cleaner for grease stains. Apply baking soda to the grease stain and leave it for six hours.
Vacuum and then dry with a cloth dampened with methylated spirits. You can also use a dry solvent carpet cleaner following the label directions.
Bubble gum
Remove as much gum as you can. Then harden the remaining gum by placing a resealable plastic bag with ice cubes on it . Remove the gum with a spoon or dull knife. Vacuum and clean the stubborn stain with a dry solvent-based carpet cleaner, following label directions.
Urine
To remove urine stains from the carpet, start by blotting up as much of the liquid as possible .
Apply an enzymatic cleaner, following the manufacturer’s instructions. This type of carpet cleaning product uses enzymes to remove both the stain and the odor.
wine or juice
Whether red wine, white wine, grape juice, or another colored beverage is spilled, start spraying with sparkling water. Dry with a clean microfiber cloth and repeat the operation until the stain disappears.
